“I think the fate of penguins is tied up in the fate of humanity, really.” Given that we humans can’t even on the existence of global warming, I think we and the penguins are in one heck of a lot of trouble.
When we left Jonah in part 2 of this series, he was just vomited onto dry land by the great fish God send to bring Jonah back to Him. It seems there’s a great lesson, pun intended, that Christians need to learn about God from Jonah. Something that kind of reminds me a bit of a scene from Star Wars. The thinking behind “Let the Wookie win” is quite different from the contest of wills between God and Jonah. And yet, the idea of “Let God win”, is just so striking.
Sometimes I wonder, is there anybody here but me? The world’s such a big place. And there are so many people. And yet, it can also feel so alone. In a similar way, we Christians believe in such a big God. He’s everywhere, we believe. And yet, sometimes it can feel so alone. Does that mean God’s not as big as we think? Or that He maybe doesn’t even exist?
It feels like many Christians are afraid of science. They think science either will, or does, disprove Christian beliefs. But is this a legitimate fear? One of my favourite (intentionally spelled that way) authors wrote: Above all, do not attempt to use science (I mean, the real sciences) as a defence against Christianity. The thing is, if you recognize the quote, you know this is exactly the opposite of the way we Christians should feel.
Who gets to define religion? Actually, the better question is – who gets to redefine religion? Maybe even who defines “of”. We’re looking at China in this series, but the same issues come up everywhere. It’s all about who sets the rules. One thing we can be sure of – it’s not God. Not in China. And not in my country or yours either.
We Christians always say things happen for a reason. And that God’s in control. However, when those things happen to us, do we live like we really believe it? We also say God’s always with us. Even in the bad times. And so, I believe God remembers my cancer situation. But, do I remember God?
My body my choice! It feels like it’s being used for lots of things these days. Not getting vaccinated. And by extension, not vaccinating kids. Getting an abortion. The Parable of The Wise And Foolish Builders. On one level, it’s about the choice between building a house on rock or sand. That sounds like an easy choice to make. On another level, it’s about what we do, if anything, after hearing or reading what Jesus had to say.
I’ve started several times to write something like this. But it’s never gotten very far. However, with things around the world deteriorating, maybe it’s time to try again? This time, it’s in the form of a question. Government christianity or Jesus’ Christianity. Which do you want? I know, some of you want to answer neither. But that’s not a choice. We’ll see why not in a moment.
What do Christians need to learn about love from Jonah? Seriously? Jonah is so, well, Old Testament. What can we learn from him? And love? Jonah is an example of love? But yes, I do believe there’s a lot we can and should learn about love, God’s love, from Jonah’s experience.
